'Star Wars' missile defense system fails again
Analysts say timing couldn't be worse, as N. Korea says it has nuclear weapons.

A very good round up of LRWM* coverage of the latest Star Wars debacle. We quibble with the analysts who say are concerned about N.K. nukes, however. The program never worked and never could work. So we are not less safe because it keeps failing its tests. And the defense industry is making a ton of money ($85 million/test whether the thing passes or fails).

True, Il Ducetto plans on actually turning this system that doesn't work on, and it will cost a ton of money to maintain it. But do you really think any military planner is going to rely on it to protect the homeland?

"Missile defense" is to the Pentagon what "trickle down" economics and "private accounts" are to Il Ducetto's domestic economy team: a convenient rubric through which to engineer a massive financial boondoggle for the benefit of a specific "Red" constituency. If the press would stop treating it like it were an actual military weapons program, the analysis would get a lot better.
