The New York Times > Washington > The Military: Panel Calls U.S. Troop Size Insufficient for Demands: "A Pentagon-appointed panel of outside experts has concluded in a new study that the American military does not have sufficient forces to sustain current and anticipated stability operations, like the festering conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and other missions that might arise."
Pudentilla, who does not have children and who is too old and too gay to serve in Mr. Bush (DODO*)'s army has several suggestions for the draft:
1) Random Selection
2) Option to Serve in military or non-military - lengths of service can vary depending on type of service.
3) Option to decline selection. Those who decline selection sign a statement that reads, "When asked to serve my country, I declined because I had other priorities." The statement is kept on file and available to press and public on request for the rest of signer's life. Those who accept selection are guaranteed four years of college (all expenses) after service. If they die during service, their estates receive whatever Harvard currently charges for four years of college, room, board and books.
4) Every elected official at the federal, state, county and local level receive two free passes which they can use to nullify a random selection (i.e., the person is tossed from the pool and doesn't face options 2 & 3). They may only use these "free passes," if it least one of their children (niece/nephew or grandchildren ok if they don't have kids) is serving in the military.
5) Openly gay people get to serve.
